Growing up in Nazi Germany, witnessing the horrors of war, and being oppressed by the Communist regime in East Germany — the early life of Gerhard Richter was everything but happy and carefree. However, faced with tough choices, he made some bold decisions and overcame the difficulties, growing up to become one of the most significant artists in the contemporary world.
By Alastair Sooke The title of this new piece, which the composer has dedicated to Richter, alludes to three Portuguese shepherd children who had visions of the Virgin Mary in and prophesied the Second World War. Elsewhere in the gallery he shows the four diptychs of Double Greyeach consisting of two panels of subtly different leaden, bruise-like hues seen behind enamelled glass.
The grey paintings, in particular, are tough: But the glass also has a distancing quality, which risks rendering these works remote. Arguably it even gives them a glazed, corporate sheen, so that at first glance they come across like slick, passionless approximations of a Rothko.

Although the images meticulously replicate the appearance of thick painterly layers, they remain resolutely flat, their surfaces matt and dull, eliciting a craving to engage with the originals instead.

A heavy sense of the sorrowful weight of history pervades the room. The Whitworth is not a religious setting, and this simple, elegant collaboration, in terms of the amount of work on display, is hardly extensive.
